A high-ranking general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has been killed in an Israeli airstrike outside the Syrian capital Damascus, several security sources report, according to Reuters.
According to AFP Iranian state-controlled media also report this.
In a statement, the Revolutionary Guards said that “Israel will pay” after the killing, according to Reuters, citing Iranian state television.
Al Jazeera reports that the killed general is Sayyed Razi Mousavi, responsible for coordinating the military cooperation between Iran and Syria.

According to the channel, Iranian state television interrupted its broadcast to announce the killing of Mousavi – who is described as one of the most experienced Revolutionary Guard advisers in Syria.
Israel has so far not commented on the Iranian information. Several Israeli media, such as major newspapers Haaretzhowever, citing an unnamed army (IDF) officer as saying that rocket attacks on northern Israel from Lebanon and Syria are expected in response to the killing.
Earlier this month, Iran reported that the Israelis had killed two advisers from the Revolutionary Guard in Syria, according to Al Jazeera.
Iran’s influence in Syria has increased since 2011, when the regime sided with President Bashar al-Assad during the country’s civil war.
