The New York Times quoted a former senior Russian official as saying that although President Putin still spoke strongly about Ukraine in public, he had quietly conveyed peace talks through intermediaries in private. However, many experts suspect that Putin is not truly seeking peace.

(Deutsche Welle Chinese website) reported that since September this year, Putin has conveyed a signal to Ukraine through an intermediary that he is willing to engage in ceasefire negotiations, thus freezing the current front. Previously, U.S. officials also disclosed that Putin planned to sign the ceasefire agreement as early as the fall of 2022, when the Russian army retreated hastily after being severely beaten in northeastern Ukraine.

The messages, delivered by anonymous sources, present a completely different image of Putin than he appears in public. In his public speeches, he often spoke harshly against Ukraine., but privately tried to reduce the risks of this war that was far longer than expected and did not give up any options. A Russian official told the New York Times: “Putin is really willing to stop on the current front.” But the official also added that Putin “will not retreat even one meter.”

Government officials in Western countries realized as late as September this year that Putin intended to seek a ceasefire. American political analysts disclosed that Russia has sent informal envoys and “dialogue partners” to discuss a possible ceasefire agreement. It is reported that the Russian envoy came up with conditions acceptable to President Putin.butThere is no indication whether Ukraine will also accept a ceasefire

Just recently, Ukraine once again demanded that Russian troops withdraw from all territories, including the Crimean Peninsula, and pay war compensation. Ukrainian President Zelensky said on December 19 that he had not seen any signs that Russia was seeking negotiations. “We only saw that they were willing to kill.”

“Der Spiegel” recently reported that German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis had dinner with a number of mainstream American experts and scholars studying Russia in Washington at the end of October. German Chancellor’s Office Minister Schmidt (Wolfgang Schmidt) also attended the dinner as an official representative of the German government. It is said that at the dinner, political scientist Samuel Charap of the think tank RAND Corporation was highly praised by Schmidt, believing that the views put forward by the former “opened up ideas for peace talks.” Chalap has previously publicly called for preparations for possible scenarios at the end of the war, because neither Russia nor Ukraine is able to achieve a decisive victory.Continuing the war will only increase casualties. According to those present, Schmidt also said during the dinner that only after a ceasefire is achieved,NATOOnly then can we decide whether to allow Ukraine to join.
