Understanding Solar and Lunar Eclipses: Explanations and Types

Report by Saiful Bahri I Lhokseumawe

SERAMBINEWS.COM, LHOKSEUMAWE – An eclipse is an event where light from a source is blocked by another object.

Like blocking the Sun’s light by the Moon causing a Solar Eclipse and blocking the Sun’s light by the Earth causing a Lunar Eclipse.

A solar eclipse occurs in the new moon phase.

Meanwhile, a lunar eclipse occurs during the full moon phase.

However, not every new moon there will be a solar eclipse and every full moon there will be a lunar eclipse.

“This is because the orbital plane of the Moon around the Earth is not parallel to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun,” explained the Head of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Sharia, IAIN Lhokseumawe, Dr Tgk Ismail, Ssy, MA.

“If the Moon’s orbital plane were the same as the Earth’s orbital plane, then we can be sure that every new moon a solar eclipse will occur and every full moon a lunar eclipse will occur,” explained Dr Tgk Ismail.

Also explained, there are four types of solar eclipses:

1. Total solar eclipse, where when the peak of the eclipse occurs, the entire disk of the Sun is covered by the disk of the Moon so that the Sun looks black and emits beautiful corona light.

2. Partial Eclipse, where at the peak of the eclipse only part of the Sun’s disk is covered by the Moon’s disk.

3. Ring Eclipse, named ring because when the peak of the eclipse occurs, the Moon’s disk only covers the middle of the Sun’s disk so that the Sun appears to be shining only on the edge circle which is shaped like a ring and in the middle position the Sun is black.

4. Hybrid Eclipse, where when the peak of the eclipse occurs, in one area a total solar eclipse is visible and in another area a ring eclipse is visible. This last type of eclipse is classified as a relatively rare or rare eclipse event.
