London, Beritasatu.com – Throughout 2023, there will be many phenomenal scientific events or discoveries that will astonish the world.
To summarize events throughout 2023, NewsForKids.net, quoted on Sunday (24/12/2023) summarizes the most interesting scientific discoveries this year.
1. Scientists Drive Lightning with Lasers (February 21, 2023).
Scientists in Switzerland used lasers to change the path of lightning strikes. The experiments show that in the future, lasers may be useful for protecting large buildings from lightning.

2. Humans Can Understand the Signals Used by Apes (February 23, 2023).
Chimpanzees use many different gestures to communicate, such as the reach they use to beg for food. Scientists show that humans have the ability to understand apes’ signs, even though most people don’t spend much time around apes.

3. Scientists Create Amazing Paint Using Ideas from Nature (20 April 2023).
Scientists at the University of Central Florida, United States created a new type of paint that is very light and strong. The color of the new paint is not like the color of most paints. Instead, the color is more like the color of a butterfly’s wings.

4. Living Coral Reef Found in Galapagos Waters (April 26, 2023).
Scientists exploring the seas around the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador discovered active coral reefs, far below sea level. The coral reef is unusual because it is very healthy and has not been damaged by humans.

5. Plants “Talk” Especially When They Are Stressed (27 April 2023).
Scientists have known for years that plants respond to the sounds around them. For example, flowers produce sweeter nectar when accompanied by the sound of bees buzzing. However, scientists in Israel have shown that plants also seem to “talk”.

6. Scientists Train AI to Read Human Minds (May 11, 2023).
Scientists create a new tool that can convert human thoughts into words. It works by using artificial intelligence (AI) programs to translate brain activity into words. Scientists say the program could help people who cannot speak due to brain injuries.

7. Brain and Spine Implants Help Paralyzed People Walk (May 30, 2023).
In 2011, Gert-Jan Oskam had a motorbike accident which left him paralyzed below the waist. Now, thanks to special electronic devices in his brain and spinal cord, he can stand and walk, controlling his actions himself.

8. Creating Electricity from Air (7 June 2023).
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA discovered a new way to generate electricity. Their method uses super tiny holes to generate electricity from water vapor in the air. Scientists hope that in the future this method will produce cheap and clean electricity anywhere and anytime.

9 . Scientist Wins Nobel Prize for Discovering Covid-19 Vaccine (4 October 2023).
The Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, two scientists whose work contributed to the development of mRNA vaccines. Their idea about mRNA was a major scientific breakthrough and saved millions of lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

10. Reading the Ancient Scroll that Burned Without Opening (October 25, 2023).
About 2,000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum (in present-day Italy). Now a group of scientists is trying to solve one of the great mysteries of that time through the Herculaneum scrolls.
