The mayor of Nice is, with Anne Hidalgo, one of the rare political figures to have left X for Threads. He explains his approach.
LA TRIBUNE SUNDAY – On December 15, you publicly announced your decision to leave X, why this choice?
CHRISTIAN ESTROSI – This social network has become a zone of chaos plagued by disinformation and hatred. I admire Elon Musk, but when he took over Twitter, he cut thousands of jobs, resulting in a complete lack of moderation. This is an approach which is, in my opinion, perfectly amoral. Furthermore, at It is also a personal choice, my loved ones and I have been threatened with death, so I think about my safety, that of my family and my colleagues.

However, you have not deleted your account, do you think you will come back?
I left my account open so that people can see the publication in which I announce that I am leaving X, but I will deactivate it soon, I have no intention of returning to it.

As an alternative, the choice of Threads was a natural choice?
Yes, I have complete confidence in the Meta group, they are serious partners. Whether it was investigations into drug trafficking, clashes between communities or even cases of harassment, they accompanied us, they cooperated with the French services. So when I saw that they were launching an alternative to Twitter, I didn’t hesitate.
Last Tuesday X was in turmoil during the vote on the immigration law, didn’t you feel a little alone on Threads?
I’m not interested in boiling, it’s not serious. What interests me is being able to communicate and report on my actions, and Threads allows me to do that. I’m not unhappy on Threads, quite the contrary! Things are already happening, I have a lot of repeats on my publications and my number of subscribers is increasing [près de 3 000 abonnés vendredi]. What is true is that I gave up on the 200,000 subscribers I had on X, it’s a bet on the future.
What makes you believe in the success of Threads?
My initiative will give impetus, I believe that many will follow me. Watch for example the show Daily, by Yann Barthès, who announced his departure from X, and they too have already joined Threads. I’m betting that this platform will be a real success, we’ll talk about it again in a few months.
Many political figures have joined Threads while remaining on X. How do you explain that they are not ready for it?
They all tell me they are going to do it! But it takes time, some are in the process of getting organized. I don’t give lessons to anyone but I try to raise awareness by explaining my approach. Ultimately, I think this will make it possible to distinguish political figures: there will be those who stayed on X and those who left. There will be those who have morals, and those who do not.
