People were surprised that Chenun came to the event with a bulletproof 2019 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S650. Such a limousine has not been seen in the dictator’s fleet before. Importing luxury goods into North Korea is difficult because the country has been under UN sanctions since 2006.
How Jong-un managed to circumvent the sanctions is not fully known. Four years ago, the North Korean leader was spotted in a customized Mercedes-Benz W221 Pullman, and that’s when New York Times reporters found “Russian traces,” hinting that the armored limousines may have arrived in Pyongyang via the port of Vladivostok.
The appearance of the new “Maybach” has not yet merited investigation. Judging by the video, Chenun currently has at his disposal an armored car with the index “S 650” and VR10 protection level armor – these were produced only two years later (in 2019 and 2020). The car has rear-wheel drive and a 6.0-liter V12 engine. It seems that the Mercedes-Maybach will become the main official car of the North Korean leader.
Although North Korea has long been under sanctions, at least 90 countries are involved in smuggling into the country, and not always luxury items. Components for the military industry, all kinds of vehicles, agricultural products and much more are smuggled into North Korea.
