December 24, 2023 06:06
From now on, the effects of cold air will not be as great, and temperatures will tend to rise across the country. In areas where heavy snowfall has occurred due to the cold wave, be careful of accidents while removing snow or snow falling from roofs.
25th (Monday) – 31st (Sunday) Mid-week: Stormy weather in northern Japan
From tomorrow, the 25th (Monday) to the 26th (Tuesday), a trough of atmospheric pressure accompanied by cold air will pass, causing unstable atmospheric conditions mainly on the Sea of Japan side. It will rain in many places in the flatlands from the San’in area to Hokuriku, and it is likely to snow more heavily in Tohoku and Hokkaido. Please be careful of lightning and gusts of wind.
On Wednesday the 27th, there will be a winter-like pattern mainly in northern Japan. In Tohoku and Hokkaido, there will be snow, mainly on the Sea of Japan side, and there will likely be some spots. However, the cold weather won’t stick around for long like it has for the past few days.
The weather is expected to be covered in high pressure on the 28th (Thursday) and 29th (Friday), resulting in clear skies over a wide area. From Saturday the 30th to Sunday the 31st, New Year’s Eve, a low pressure system is expected to move over the southern seas, and there will be temporary rain on the Pacific side as well.
Temperatures across the country are likely to be at or above normal on many days. From the Kanto region to the west, there are days when the maximum temperature rises to around 15 degrees Celsius, and winter coats can get in the way during the day.
From around the 28th (Thursday), the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued “early weather information regarding high temperatures” from Kyushu to Hokkaido, stating that there is a possibility of extremely high temperatures that only occur once every 10 years. In areas where there is a lot of snow, be careful of snow falling from the roof and avalanches.
January 1st (Monday) – 6th (Saturday) – Warmth like early spring
Warm air is likely to prevail at the start of 2024 as well. However, due to the influence of low pressure, there will be few clear sunny days.
From January 1st (Monday) to New Year’s Day, January 2nd (Tuesday), and from January 4th (Thursday) to January 5th (Friday), it is likely that there will be periods of rain on the Pacific coast, from the Kinki region to the Kanto region. Clouds tend to spread along the Sea of Japan side, and there will be rain and snow in places. Rain is expected to spread from the west on Saturday the 6th.
Even after the new year, there will continue to be high temperatures for January. The third day of the month is particularly warm, with the highest temperature in central Tokyo on Wednesday the 3rd reaching 18 degrees Celsius, and it looks like it will be a cheerful time when the cherry blossoms bloom. However, it can get cold in the mornings and evenings in many places, so please dress accordingly.
As the forecast is still far in the future, there is a wide range of predictions regarding the timing of rain and temperature. Check the latest forecast.
Precautions when removing snow
When snow accumulates on your roof, you want to remove it as soon as possible. There are three things to keep in mind when removing snow safely:
(1)Before removing snow, be sure to check that the snow is not loose. Fresh snow or a warm, sunny afternoon can especially loosen the snow on your roof. Icicles may also fall with the snow.
(2) If you use a ladder to climb onto the roof, be sure to secure the ladder firmly with ropes, etc. to prevent it from moving. When moving from the ladder to the roof, extra care must be taken to avoid falling.
(3) When removing snow, leave the snow around the building. In the unlikely event that you fall from the roof, the snow will act as a cushion. Even if it’s a hassle, be sure to wear a lifeline, a helmet, and non-slip shoes. Don’t forget to bring your cell phone with you while you work.
