Arsenal become “Christmas champions” in the Premier League.
“The Gunners” drew 1-1 in the big game against Liverpool at Anfield.
– I am happy to be where we are, says coach Mikel Arteta.
Gabriel Magalhães headed Arsenal’s lead away to Liverpool after just four minutes but Mohamed Salah hammered home the equalizer – and the final score 1-1 – after half an hour.
Liverpool did not lack opportunities to take all three points.
Among other things, the team had a huge counterattack with several players storming forward in the middle of the second half and Mohamed Salah played Trent Alexander-Arnold who hit the crossbar.
Enjoying the series lead
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was enthralled by the match.
– An incredible football match, one of the most intense I have witnessed in 20 years in this league. Some moments we were better – the last 20 minutes we wanted more – but a draw is a fair result, Arteta told BBC.
The Spaniard has once again managed to lead Arsenal to a position where the team is fighting for the Premier League title.
– I am happy to be where we are. Tomorrow we will have a lovely dinner with our families and then we will get back to work, says Arteta.
Klopp doesn’t care
If Liverpool had won, they would have taken over the league lead from Arsenal before Christmas.
Six out of the last ten years, the team that topped the Premier League at Christmas has won the league. It is a fact that Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp did not care about before the match.
– I have not thought about it. I could not care less. I have only thought about this game and not about the rest of the season, Klopp told the BBC.
Arsenal top the Premier League one point ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa.
