US President Joe Biden Tested by War in Gaza Ahead of 2022 Election

[앵커]

US President Joe Biden, ahead of next year’s presidential election, has been tested by the war in Gaza.

The U.S. strategy of publicly supporting Israel and pressuring it to refrain from attacking Israel is currently in a dilemma.

This is reporter Kim Tae-hyeon’s report.

The US Biden administration is trying to persuade Israel to scale back military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Although the international community is calling for a ceasefire, the United States is seemingly pursuing a strategy of suppressing the war through advice rather than pressure.

The United States’ approach of emphasizing the protection of civilians while supporting Israel’s right to defense has now reached an impasse.

The British BBC diagnosed that the United States is isolated on the international stage and is losing support from within the Democratic Party, young voters, and Arab Americans.

For President Biden, who is running for re-election next year, the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where the death toll has exceeded 20,000, is a major test.

Opinion polls show that more Americans in their 20s are opposed to Israel, and progressive members of the Democratic Party are wary of Israel using American-made weapons.

However, it is not easy for President Biden to put strong pressure on Israel.

This is because we must also be conscious of the Israel support camp.

The United States is in a dilemma, and its leadership is being shaken as the UN Security Council is reluctant to call for a ceasefire.

This is in contrast to his leadership in rallying the international community during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, public sentiment in Saudi Arabia, an American ally that has turned against Israel, is also a concern for President Biden.

In a recent survey, 96% of Saudis responded that Arab countries should cut off all ties with Israel, while the number of respondents who were positive about Hamas jumped to 40%.
