Boxing Legend Ulli Wegner Reflects on Retirement and Health Setbacks

Ulli Wegner trained the best boxers in Germany and made them world champions. The 81-year-old is not rich – but he is happy.

Boxing trainer legend Ulli Wegner is enjoying his retired life and never sheds a tear for his beloved sport. “Surprisingly not. When I received the termination notice from Sauerland in the mail in 2019, it only hurt for a short time. And let’s be honest: you can retire at 77, right?” said Sven Ottke’s former coach to the “Leipziger Volkszeitung”. He left his wife Margret alone often enough. Therefore, it was time to “leave the ring ropes.”

The 81-year-old, who now lives in Berlin, helped boxing greats like Ottke and Arthur Abraham achieve great success during his coaching career. “I didn’t become a millionaire, but my Margret and I are doing well, we can eat warm meals twice a day and afford what we want to afford. A vacation, Christmas presents for our loved ones. We don’t need any luxury,” Wegner clarified happily.

Ulli Wegner after health setbacks: “Work on former light-footedness”

He has now largely recovered from his health setbacks in recent years. Wegner suffered a broken femur in a fall on New Year’s Eve at the beginning of 2022, which required surgery. In 2019, the ex-coach broke his left thigh. A tumor was removed during an intestinal operation a year ago.

“I have a new hip and am working on regaining my former light-footedness with great optimism and the help of my dear Margret. Otherwise, the Wegners are doing well, we can’t complain, we’re looking forward to Christmas,” said the FC Bayern and RB Leipzig football fan. dpa
