The US Supreme Court gives Donald Trump a decisive victory. But the ex-president’s problems are not yet over.
Washington DC – Former President Donald Trump is playing for time – and is at least temporarily successful. The US Supreme Court announced on Friday that it would not address the question of Trump’s immunity for the time being. Special prosecutor Jack Smith had demanded this from the nine justices on the US Supreme Court. But Smith failed and Trump can claim a legal success.
The date planned for the beginning of March for the trial on the allegation of election fraud will now probably no longer be possible to meet. Prosecutor Smith had charged Trump in Washington DC with attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 US election. Trump’s legal team, however, invoked their client’s immunity, which he is entitled to due to his role as President of the USA. Smith, in turn, had asked the Supreme Court to quickly clarify whether Trump can be prosecuted at the federal level because of his behavior after the election three years ago – or whether the immunity mentioned applies in this case.
Donald Trump is due in court on January 6, 2021
The background is the events surrounding January 6, 2021. Supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington DC, where the parliament buildings of the United States of America are located. At that time, the US Congress had met to formally confirm the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the US election. Trump had previously urged his supporters in a speech to march to Congress and “fight.” As a result of the riots, five people died. Trump’s defenders argued that the ex-president could not be legally prosecuted for actions that were part of his duties as head of state.

Donald Trump wants to be president again
For Trump, the verdict is a long-awaited victory in court. There are currently several civil and criminal lawsuits pending against the Republican. In four cases he is accused, among other things, of attempting to manipulate the election. This accusation was recently supported by the emergence of another tape recording of Trump. In this, the then President is said to have urged two Republicans in Michigan not to verify the result of the US election in the state in order to prevent Biden’s victory in the hotly contested swing state.
Donald himself still denies all allegations. The 77-year-old politician is currently running again in the US primaries. Trump is running for the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 US election. According to current polls on the Republican primaries, everything looks as if there will be a repeat of the duel between Trump and Biden. (dil)
