Traveling to Salernitana, AC Milan snatched a draw against the bottom side (2-2). Olivier Giroud’s teammates are guaranteed to remain on the podium at the end of the weekend even if Inter Milan and Juventus Turin could widen the gap in front.
No second consecutive victory for AC Milan in Serie A. On paper, the trip of the Lombard club to the field of Salernitana, the red lantern, seemed unbalanced but this Friday evening, the difference of 24 points at kick-off between the two teams was not really obvious. The first minutes were balanced, Rafael Leão with a cross shot for the visitors (6th) and Boulaye Dia for the locals (7th) had the opportunity to make the difference. It was from a set point, and a free kick kicked by Reijnders, that AC Milan opened the scoring, thanks to Fikayo Tomori’s header, too powerful for Benoît Costil (17th). In the wake of this opening score, Mike Maignan had to work several times, notably in front of Kastanos (41st).
The Blues goalkeeper, however, was unable to do anything in front of Fazio’s header, climbing higher than Loftus-Cheek from a corner to equalize with vigor (1-1, 42nd). At the break, there was nothing illogical about the draw and the general feeling of balance was not denied during the second act. At the hour mark, however, Benoît Costil opposed Loftus-Cheek’s shot (60th) well and a few minutes later, Mike Maignan was much less imperial at the near post, on a floating shot from Antonio Candreva, who revived his team (2-1, 63rd). As things did not want to turn out in favor of AC Milan, Fikayo Tomori left his teammates due to injury (65th). Maignan quickly recovered, diverting a shot 30 meters from Pasquale Mazzocchi (66th).
Without ideas, AC Milan struggled to find the resources to turn the tide but at the end of the match, following a delivery from Giroud, Jovic equalized with a beautiful half-volley and saved the day for AC Milan (2-2, 90th). Olivier Giroud’s teammates are assured of retaining their 3rd place at the end of the weekend but Inter Milan, facing Lecce on Saturday; then Juventus in Frosinone, could increase their lead if successful. Salernitana is certain to remain last but there is hope of remaining, Udinese, the first non-relegation team, being 4 points behind.
