Several Fluvius customers have received a letter in the mail in recent weeks stating that their natural gas meter needs to be checked urgently. “Samples show that with this type of meter the coupling comes loose in very exceptional circumstances and therefore no longer completely closes the seal between the connecting pipe and the gas meter,” the letter reads. However, according to Fluvius spokesperson Björn Verdoodt, there is no reason to panic. “Only if the meter is given a serious push can a leak possibly occur,” he says.
This concerns a total of 35,000 Fluvius digital gas meters that were installed in the period from the end of October 2022 to mid-March 2023. The problem with the coupling could lead to a leak in these meters in exceptional situations.
“A leak could only occur if the meter was given a serious push,” says Verdoodt, who emphasizes that there is no reason to panic. During installation, the technicians always check whether the meter is not leaking. “And that also happened with these meters,” it sounds.

Although the chance of a leak during normal use is extremely small, Fluvius does not want to take any risks. “Because safety comes first and these gas meters have to serve for many years, we visit all homes and apartments where we installed this type of gas meter between the end of October last year and mid-March this year,” says Verdoodt.
Control
Fluvius customers who have received a letter can make an appointment online or by telephone. Technicians will then come by to see if the seal comes loose when the meter is pushed. “If that is the case, we apply extra sealant or install a new meter,” Verdoodt explains. “In both cases, the meter must be removed from the connecting pipe. The customer will of course not be able to use gas for a while,” he said. The check takes one hour.
Currently, 30,000 affected customers have already been informed, the last 5,000 will receive a letter in the coming weeks. Fluvius has also already checked 2,600 gas meters. The grid operator aims to have all checks carried out by the spring of 2024.
