Mayor Eric Adams Removes Oldest Scaffolding in Historic Harlem – A Step Towards Reclaiming Public Space

The mayor of New York, Eric Adamstoday presided over an event in which he was demolished the oldest scaffolding in the citywhich for 21 years stood in front of a historic building in the Harlem community.

In a city like New York, where construction is always taking place, scaffolding is common to protect pedestrians of the rubble.

According to data from the Mayor’s Office, by 2022 there would be approximately 9,000 scaffolding with an average age of almost 500 days, which occupied almost 400 miles (643,738 kilometers), approximately 3 percent of the city’s sidewalk space.

That led Adams to unveil a plan last July to remove scaffolding that were not necessary and more than 500 of these structures have already been removed.

“For 21 years, Harlem residents sacrificed public space and the beauty of a historic landmark because property managers failed to do their jobs” to repair the building, said Adams, who was accompanied by Department of Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo.

He scaffold in front of 409 of the Avenida Edgecombein the neighborhood of Sugar Hilldeclared a historic monument in 1991, which was home to writers, musicians, intellectuals and activists, was removed after the city filed a court case against the building’s managers for their repeated failure to repair the structure.

This apartment building became famous in the 1930s and 1940s because important African American figures such as Supreme Court Justice lived there. Thurgood Marshallthe writer and editor William Stanley Braithwaitethe painter Aaron Douglasan influential Harlem Renaissance artist, or the sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett.

“Today, we return 409 Edgecombe Avenue to the hands of the Sugar Hill community and remain focused on continuing to safely remove unsightly sidewalk scaffolding across the five boroughs.”Adams further noted.

While Commissioner Oddo noted that a scaffold installed as part of a new construction “is a sign of economic activity“.

“And scaffold constructed as part of necessary maintenance is an indication of compliance and responsible ownership,” but, he added, when it is maintained for years while delaying necessary repairs to the building “is selfish and unacceptableand we will continue to do everything we can to address these situations.”
