Reviving the Traditions of Christmas in Guayaquil: A Journey in Time with Dr. Katia Murrieta

Since 2010, Dr. Katia Murrieta has presented a musical magazine through which she attempts to remember and perpetuate the customs and traditions of our city, on the occasion of the Christmas and New Year holidays, which is why this work is titled The New Year’s Eve parties in the Guayaquil of yesterday, that is, it is a journey in time, from the 1950s backwards.

The idea, tells us the author, who directs and produces it, is to rescue the spiritual form with which these celebrations were held, which began in the month of December with Advent, a stage during which families of previous generations prepared for receive Jesus; the inns, which commemorated the various stations that Joseph and Mary had to make asking for shelter before arriving in Bethlehem; the way the cribs were made and the Christmas tree was decorated, the arrival of Santa Claus and finally the burning of the old year.

“Like every year, except during the pandemic, we will present this play and we hope you can come with your families, you will have fun,” says the lawyer and writer.

The musical show seeks to promote the traditions that have been developed for years during the Christmas season.

The work is divided into three parts, which are performed sequentially, without interruption, and as the author narrates the events, they are represented on stage with a combination of lights, sounds and special effects.

For recreation, national and foreign Christmas carols are sung and danced, with the participation of the tenor Hugo Huerta, the soprano Yanina Murga and the cast of the dance group of the Ibero-American Art Corporation directed by Engineer Fernando Rebutty. composed of children, young people and older adults, who also remember the child’s pass, until Santa Claus arrives, a character represented by the actor Marcelo Gálvez, who in the form of a dialogue lets the public know his origin, the reason for the distribution of gifts, of the existence of the tree and many more details.

Then preparations begin to bid farewell to the old year, with the different cabalas that were held, the burning of the doll, the screams of the children asking for charity for the old year and the presence of the widows, among whom the artist Yuber Segarra stands out. , who plays the role of one of them.

To liven up the atmosphere, the magazine ends with happy songs in the voice of singer Joe Vicente, which are also danced by those present.

The work, which is sponsored by the Prefecture of Guayas, will be presented on Thursday, December 28, at 7:00 p.m., in the auditorium of the Eloy Alfaro Civic Center. The entrance is through Quito Avenue. Free entrance. (AND)
