Each of us has a different understanding of what it means to do nothing. However, the most important thing is to turn away from the countless responsibilities and tasks for a moment, instead giving yourself time in silence to allow yourself to hear your thoughts and feel your feelings. For some it may be meditation, for others it may be simply sitting alone and in silence.

“Doing nothing means giving your mind a break without using up your precious and limited cognitive resources and attention span,” says Gloria Mark, author of Attention Span.

“Doing nothing means completely disconnecting from smart devices, TV and even people,” says Gloria Mark. She mentions that there are also people for whom doing nothing means choosing a less stimulating activity rather than doing nothing at all. It also has its benefits. By giving up serious tasks, the internal pressure of the never-ending to-do list is reduced, it allows the brain to switch to less important thinking.

“Inactivity for a period of time can create a state of relaxation, lower blood pressure, improve digestion, relax muscles and focus attention,” says Francine Toder, MD, a retired clinical psychologist and lecturer at California State University.

“When you’re very busy, the stress hormone cortisol rises and that raises blood pressure, increases muscle tension and increases irritability.” Something must be done to relieve stress. And this is the moment to do NOTHING.

However, experts remind us that we can’t get too excited about doing nothing either, because it can have the opposite effect. There is an ideal level of mental stimulation, and too little stimulation can often be just as harmful as overstimulation or overload. In other words, doing nothing for a long time can cause symptoms similar to overexertion.

Thanks to smartphones and the Internet, almost everyone can be reached instantly in everyday life. Therefore, when the decision is made to take a break for a moment and do nothing, you must make sure that no one can disturb you.
