Spanish and French Musical Delights: Liepaja Symphony Orchestra New Year’s Concert 2023

The Liepaja Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Guntis Kuzma invite you to three festive concerts – on December 28, 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. in the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall.

Together with opera singer Marlene Kane and Ukrainian violinist Dmytro Tkachenko, the orchestra will play fiery and sparkling music by Spanish composers as well as Spanish melodies from the golden repertoire of French composers Maurice Ravel and Georges Bizet.

“The New Year’s program this year will be illuminated by the hot-blooded rhythms of southern Europe and the bright sun. We have chosen the musical designs of both Spanish and foreign composers, where there will be motifs from Bizet’s “Carmen” and Ravel’s “The Gypsy”, as well as zarzuelas and temperamental dance steps, as well as hitherto unknown melodies, whose passionate arabesques will make you forget winter,” says Kuzma, artistic director of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.

“And what more joy to collaborate with three soloists: there will be the fiery Marlēna Kane, the Ukrainian storm bird Dmytro Tkachenko, and we will also meet the rising star of the cello game Jānis Rinkuli junior.”

Marlene Kane has brilliantly presented herself as a versatile and attractive singer in the opera and operetta genres. The artist has participated in the productions of the Estonian National Opera, the Latvian National Opera and the Latvian Operetta Foundation. Marlēna Keine is a laureate of several international competitions, she has successfully participated in vocal competitions in Latvia, Sweden, USA, Estonia, Ukraine and elsewhere.

The charming opera singer will be joined by one of Ukraine’s most outstanding soloists, the internationally recognized violinist, laureate of several prestigious international competitions, Dmytro Tkachenko. He has performed in the most prestigious concert halls with leading orchestras in most European countries, Japan, China, South Korea and the USA.

The young Latvian cellist Jānis Rinkulis will also take the stage at the concert, who won the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra Sympathy Award and 3rd place at the Valdas Vikmans Latvian Young Player Competition held in the spring.

The concert will be directed and conducted by Gundars Silakaktiņš: “When creating the Liepāja Symphony New Year’s concert, I thought about the unifying and the different. At first glance, it seems that there are no two more different peoples than the Spaniards and the Latvians. However, there are things and ideas that unite us all, regardless of where we live and the era in which we live. Whether it be love, flowers, joy or sadness… Or various traditions whose power we trust and hope will bring luck and happiness. The power of music and poetry unites us, moreover, when we spend the old year and welcome the new one, we want to believe that there is more that unites.”

The Liepāja Symphony New Year’s Concert has become a beautiful and sparkling tradition at the turn of the year celebrations, and every time the musicians of the orchestra go on a journey together with the audience to a different place: at the end of 2021 it was Vienna swirling with aristocratic dances, while last year it was Broadway full of symphonic jazz and musicals.

Tickets for Liepāja Symphony Orchestra concerts are available in the “Biļešu Paradīze” network: www.bilesuparadize.lv.

The concert is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the city of Liepāja.
