Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Review – Exploring Godzilla’s Return and the Problems of the MonsterVerse

Godzilla smashed the movie theaters in 2014 with a long-awaited comeback to Hollywood, which marked the beginning of MonsterVerse by the studio Legendary. Gareth Edwards’ film was followed by the arrival of seagulls the most popular of the franchise: the famous King Kong, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan and finally Mechagodzilla. As much as the visual spectacle of the four films (so far) is breathtaking, some criticism has been leveled at the main characters and storylines of this new franchise. This is a theme that unfortunately repeats itself with the series Apple TV+, Monarch : Legacy of Monsters (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters)while we barely manage to see the main star at the expense of soporific protagonists.

Following the Battle of San Francisco revealing the existence of Godzilla and the Titans in 2014, we follow the journey of a family destined to reveal their buried secrets and a legacy linking them to Monarch, a secret government agency that hunts and studies organisms unidentified land masses.

The good news is that each of the appearances of seagulls is memorable and the action scenes are spectacular thanks to the large budget thatApple TV+ invested in the series. Observing the treatment of the main characters and Godzilla himself, however, it is difficult not to think of the recent success of the vastly superior Godzilla: Minus One from That one, made for less than $15 million. The family drama at the heart of the story of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has nothing to wow the gallery, and the same can be said of the spy intrigue and corporate mysteries that take up a large majority of the series’ time.

What captures attention is the expansion of MonsterVerse through different new seagulls exciting things that keep you awake. Fans of the cinematic universe have plenty to sink their teeth into with visually captivating sequences involving the monsters; moments that will get you out of your seat. Credit must also be given to the distribution of the character of Lee Shaw, a former colonel in the US army who ends up getting involved with Monarch, with the father/son duo Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, a true stroke of genius. Indeed, the series also ventures into flashbacks and time jumps which can sometimes become dizzying. The origin of Monarch – the evil corporation in the image of Umbrella Corporation, Cyberdyne Systems et Weyland-Yutani of this world – is explored at length, but does not arouse the same interest as when we contemplate the colossal creatures sowing destruction and engaging in hellish battles.

Appearances of the main attraction, Godzilla, are rare throughout the ten episodes, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters introduces a lot of dull characters that make its absence felt even more. Everything is saved by amazing special effects and certain strong moments which have almost all been revealed in the trailers. From a technical point of view, the vibrant soundtrack and the growing mythology of the universe still manage to take us into the adventure.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ends on such a strong note (the last episode arrives on January 5) that we almost manage to forget its weaker moments. However, it’s hard not to think about the wasted potential, especially with the recent success of fantasy Minus One. The ball is in your court… Hollywood.
