Tiesj Benoot has stood up for his new teammate Cian Uijtdebroeks. During the team presentation of Visma | Lease a Bike, the young classification rider was already present and not much later the news came that all parties had agreed on the transfer of Uijtdebroeks. Benoot saw the transfer soap from the sidelines and wanted to say something about it: “He has a lot to deal with.”
“I would especially like to appeal to the press to tackle him less,” said Benoot Sporza. “He is 20 years old and he has a lot to deal with. You don’t want to read what a young rider has to deal with on social media. We often talk about mental well-being, but that is forgotten here. I hope it doesn’t bother him too much.”
The situation now seems to be over now that the camp-Uijtdebroeks, BORA-hansgrohe and Visma | Lease a Bike have reached an agreement on the transition. The UCI has now also given official approval for the transfer of Uijtdebroeks as of January 1, 2024.
Benoot had already met his compatriot at a training camp and is looking forward to working together in the coming season, although the two will not race together much. “As a young rider, he is with the best team to develop. He has received a warm welcome here,” said Benoot.
