The Ablation and Implant Coordinator of Catamarca (Caica), of the Ministry of Health of the Province, together with the Procurement Unit of the San Juan Bautista Interzonal Hospital, performed a new multi-organ ablation yesterday. The donor was a 25-year-old female patient and the family accompanied the donation process.
During the year 2023, 22 ablations were performed, 7 of organs and 15 of tissues, which allowed 37 transplants to be carried out.
In this regard, Dr. Marcelo Lobo, director of Caica, in dialogue with El Esquiú Play commented that “ablation is a surgical process where organs are extracted for transplant purposes. That happened at our San Juan Bautista Hospital, in the early morning hours, after almost 36 hours of work, where a patient who had a very serious illness, which led to the diagnosis of brain death, was able to donate her kidneys and corneas for patients. of our province.”
“When the brain is left without functions it is equal to death, it is an irreversible condition and it is the only possibility where the person can donate organs. These deaths occur in four out of every thousand deaths,” he stated.
Likewise, he commented: “the truth is that they are moments that lead us to have more strength to continue because they are critical moments for the donor’s family. We have to accompany them and we also absorb all those feelings, but then when we can talk to the transplanted people and see how their lives improved, it gives us a very strong injection of energy, to have these operations that are so big.”
“The kidneys go to the transplant centers in Córdoba where our patients from Catamarca are registered and the corneas go to the eye bank in Santiago del Estero, where they will be cataloged and then sent to Córdoba, where our patients will be transplanted,” Indian.
Regarding the operation, Lobo said: “our Ministry of Health provided the land transport of the kidneys and the corneas will be searched by eye bank personnel also by land.”
Finally, he commented that “in 2021, the provincial strategic plan was generated, where one of the fundamental points was to activate the procurement of organs in our province, developing the Procurement Units and our main Procurement Unit is in the San Juan Hospital. Bautista, where we have the highest donation rate in the Province.”
“The transplants that patients need the most are corneas and kidneys, that is our priority, we are working hard on that and in the hospital all the administrative procedures and supplies are being developed to be able to perform the transplants here,” he noted.
