30 children died on the roads by the end of October, 1136 were injured. For the same period last year, there were nine fewer children who died. 23 of the 30 children died as passengers in the cars. This is what the expert from the Road Safety Agency Rosen Rapchev said.
“The number one reason children are killed on the roads is when they are passengers in the vehicle and the driver’s responsibility to keep them safe is extremely important,” he said.
Children between the ages of 10 and 17 are the most vulnerable group. Until the age of 12 or up to 150 cm height, children must always travel in seat-type safety systems, but after that the seat belt is not properly fastened, Rapchev said.
“When they are younger, they sit and secure themselves in child seats. But when they get a little older, they don’t put their seat belts in the back seat. Many people do not know that not only the placement of the safety belt, but also the way in which it should be adjusted and fastened, this also has a great impact on the minor damages if a traffic accident occurs”, Rapchev also pointed out.
The expert recommends to be careful with the speed and road conditions in the winter months. “Our children are in our cars and let’s keep them safe and not distracted while driving,” he concluded.
