Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Microsoft plans to end support for the Windows 10 operating system in 2025. This step is estimated to make 240 computers (PCs) unusable and have to be thrown away.
Reuters citing the results of Canalys research on the impact of ending support for Windows 10. Microsoft plans to end software support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Microsoft’s new operating system is expected to be specifically designed to bring artificial intelligence (AI) technology to the PC platform.
Canalys estimates that around 240 million PCs will become 480 million kilograms of trash, or the equivalent weight of 320,000 cars, after Windows 10 support is turned off.
Without support for operating system updates, PCs using Windows 10 still function. However, the majority of companies are not expected to continue using technology that no longer receives security system updates.
Microsoft is actually offering to continue security support for Windows 10 until October 2028 at an undisclosed cost.
The problem is, the majority of institutional users will choose to switch to devices that can use a new operating system rather than having to incur additional costs just to “patch” an outdated operating system.
Hardware waste used in PCs and data centers can actually be recycled. Some of the recycled materials are then used as components for the production of electric motorized vehicles.
“Using unused computers into magnets, which are critical components of electric motor vehicle technology and wind turbines, will help meet global electricity demand,” said Noveon Magnetics Chief Commercial Officer Peter Afiuny.
Afiuny added that hard drives are often thrown away when they can still be used. This makes rare earth waste accumulate.
Redwood Materials, a battery recycling company, states that batteries can be recycled continuously by reusing lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper metals.
