Gift cards not only represent a nice gift for December, your family or friends, but they are also an easy-to-use gift. However, the FBI warns that scammers are lurking.
Our Univision correspondent, Brian Segovia, offers recommendations to avoid being scammed when purchasing one of these gift cards.
The advice initially comes from the United States Department of Justice.
5 recommendations so you don’t get scammed when buying gift cards
- Mainly, you should check that the card number or pin is NOT exposed anywhere on the card.
- Also, verify that the card is not cut in the barcode area that stores the number.
- If you find a gift card in this condition, do not ignore it or notify the salesperson on duty, but report it directly to the manager.
Scammers can manipulate and scratch the card, with the aim of copying the code and stealing the money when it is active. They can even cut the code area, placing it later.
When buying them online, you should also be careful
- Don’t buy gift cards that are on discount, because it could be a scam
- It is convenient that you buy the gift card directly from the corresponding store. It is the best way to guarantee that it is an official card.
If you are a victim of a scam when purchasing a gift card, you can report it on the Federal Trade Commission website, in the “reports” section. Click here to make a complaint.
We also recommend that you report the scam to the NYPD or your local police station.
