Tenjipalam: Eight nominees of the Governor, including Padma Shri awardee Balan Putheri, who came to the Calicut University Senate meeting, were detained by SFI workers. They could not attend the meeting as more than a hundred SFI members blocked the gate and both ways of the Senate Hall, alleging that the governor was politicizing the universities due to gang relations.
The governor nominated 18 new people to the university senate. Nine of them were accused of gang affiliation. Among the Governor’s nominees are Balan Putheri, AR Praveen Kumar of Thrissur Cherp CNN Boys HSS, C Manoj of Puranattukara Vidyamandir HSS, AV Harish of Malappuram Araikal UPS and Pukayur Kunnath. Afzal Zaheer, AK Anuraj of Eranjipalam, Kozhikode, C. Sneha of Pattambi SNGS and PM Ashwin of Guruvayoorappan College, Kozhikode attended the meeting. One did not arrive.
The Senate meeting was scheduled for 10 am. In view of the protest, the governor’s nominees reached the Senate hall earlier, but before that the SFI workers had taken control of the gate. By eight o’clock, the defense was in the presence of the police. They were admitted to the hall by asking the names and organization details of the members who had come to the Senate meeting. CPM, Muslim League and Congress nominees were admitted.
There were five agendas in the meeting. The agendas were passed with applause, ignoring the protests of the UDF student representatives. This led to an uproar between the UDF-LDF members. With this, the meeting ended within a quarter of an hour. The use of force by the police to arrest the SFI members was still not over.
Vice Chancellor M.K. said that SFI was not aware of the protest in advance and filed a complaint with the police as soon as it was noticed. Jayaraj said. Balan Putheri said that although everyone has the right to protest, it is anti-democratic to prevent it.
Governor sought legal advice
Earlier, when the list for Senate nomination was given to the Governor, the Calicut VC Chancellor, the panel had been suggested. Of these, only two were considered and the remaining 16 were nominated by the governor. Three are from Congress and one from Muslim League. There are people working in different fields. Last time all 18 were CPM members. There are a total of 108 people in the Senate. The governor has sought legal advice on the SFI blocking of his nominees. 25 UDF senators lodged a complaint with the governor against the control of the Senate hall by the SFI activists.
