The eight-year marriage of the former President of Estonia Tomas Hendrik Ilves and his wife Ieva Ilves is divorcing, Ilves announced.
“In this pre-Christmas mood, it is with deep sadness that I have to tell you that almost eight years of marriage with my husband Tomas Ilves are ending,” Ilves wrote on social media on Thursday.
“No time is right for such decisions, but now, after much thought and respecting Tomas’ choice, it is clear to me that from now on we will each go our own way, taking care of the children’s well-being together,” she declared, expressing her gratitude to the Estonian people for their warm welcome.
“I have always felt at home in Estonia. I have learned a lot from you and I am taking your experience, especially in the technology sector, further to the world – currently working in Ukraine,” added Ilvesa, who is currently working in the European Union’s consultative mission in Kyiv.
Ilves married Ieva Kupci, a Latvian civil servant at the time, on January 2, 2016, in a ceremony at the Halliste Church, Vīlanda County, Estonia. After the wedding, Kupce took her husband’s surname. Ilves, who divorced his second wife Evelina Ilves in the spring of 2015, got engaged to Kupci in mid-November.
Ilves was the president of Estonia from 2006 to 2016. Ieva Ilves is his third wife, they have a son together. Ilves has three children from a previous relationship, and Ilvesa has two children.
