Ukraine Faces Increased Loan Needs Due to Stalling Foreign Aid: Finance Minister

Ukraine will have to take out more loans than planned in the first two months of 2024 due to stalling aid from abroad. The commitments from the partner states were not enough, Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko said today.

“That’s why we have now put the Plan B mechanism into effect.” In addition to our own borrowing, this also provides for earlier payment of dividends from state-controlled companies.

The EU announced the disbursement of another aid loan for Ukraine. As Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced, this is about the last 1.5 billion euros from a total of 18 billion euros in support program for 2023.

It is unclear what will happen next year with financial aid for the country attacked by Russia. A new aid program worth 50 billion euros for the next four years should actually have been agreed at the EU summit at the end of last week. However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban prevented this with a veto.
