He last saw them alive at 5 am, when he noticed that They were foaming at the mouth and nose, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a news conference yesterday. The mother performed CPR on them at the apartment on E. 175th St. near Topping Ave. until paramedics arrived and found the children in a state of rigor mortis in their beds. They were officially declared dead around 11:20 a.m. Monday.
Despite adequate heating in the apartment, both children were already cold to the touch, suggesting that they could have suffered cardiac arrest some time before the mother called 911, according to sources.
After the first autopsies on Tuesday, A spokesman for the city’s Office of the Medical Examiner (OCME) said further studies would be needed to determine how the children died.
“The apartment was stocked with food, baby clothes and everything a child would need,” Detective Kenny said. None of the children had obvious signs of trauma and no drugs were found inside the home.. “They were a calm and loving family,” she added. “Until the [médico forense] Say something different, it seems to be a medical tragedy.”
On November 30, the boy was sent home after vomiting at school. Since then he had been “experiencing cold symptoms, had a runny nose and had green mucus coming out,” Kenny detailed. His twin sister was also vomiting and had an ear infection. In addition to those symptoms, she was “acting irrationally…biting and spitting at school.”
It is unclear if they have been seen by any doctors in recent weeks. The twins’ father reportedly suggested his wife take them to the emergency room over the weekend, which he planned to do Monday morning.
After the horrible discovery, The distraught mother was taken to an area hospital for observation, NYPD Deputy Chief Benjamin Gurley said Monday. She then she was subjected to a psychological exam.
The children’s father, who works as a home care aide at a facility in Port Chester, Westchester County, where he sleeps Monday through Friday, was not home when they died, Kenny said. He was questioned Monday and was cooperating with investigators.
The family has no history of domestic violence calls to the NYPD.
