Latin American Christmas Traditions: Posadas, Child Jesus, Midnight Mass, and More

NEW YORK — The Christmas season is one of the favorites of the entire community and there is very little left to celebrate this holiday with family, friends, loved ones or in the way that warms your heart.

The traditions of the season are one of the reasons why people feel this season in a more special way. There is no doubt that in Latin America there are unique and different traditions that raise the Christmas spirit. From seasonal dishes to Christmas carols that brighten the soul.

The posadas or novenas of bonuses

The posadas are a traditional celebration that takes place 9 days before Christmas, that is, from December 16 to 24. They are celebrated mainly in countries such as Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.

The idea is that during these 9 days, people visit a house, as a representation of the Virgin Mary’s search to find a lodging for the baby Jesus.

Yolanda Vásquez tells us more from The Bronx.

On the other hand, in other Latin American countries, such as Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador, it is called novenas de aquinaldos. In these countries, from December 16 to 24, people gather to pray the novena, sing Christmas carols and eat seasonal dishes.

Child Jesus instead of Santa Claus

A classic tradition for most Latin American countries is related to the giving of gifts by the Child Jesus. The tradition is that the gifts come from the Baby Jesus because Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus.

For most Latin American countries, although Christmas is on the 25th, the main celebration takes place on December 24 in which everyone waits until midnight to celebrate Christmas Eve and the arrival of the baby Jesus.

Christmas dinner

Although everyone in Latin America celebrates with a Christmas dinner, for each country there are different seasonal dishes.
