Nelson: New Zealand won the second match of the one-day cricket series against Bangladesh by seven wickets. They won the three ODI series 2-0.
Batting first, Bangladesh scored 291 runs at the Saxton Oval in Nelson. Batting in reply, New Zealand scored the winning run with 22 balls to spare. Half-centuries from Henty Nicholls (95 off 99 balls with one six and eight fours), Will Young (89 off 94 balls with two sixes and eight fours) and Rachin Ravindra (45 off 33 balls with one six and seven fours), skipper Tom Latham (34 not out from 32 balls) and Tom Blundell (24 not out including a six and a four in 20 balls) and their opportune batting brought the team to victory.
Hasan Mahmood took two wickets for Bangladesh. Opener Soumya Sarkar’s brilliant batting led Bangladesh to a good score. Sarkar scored 169 runs off 151 balls including two sixes and 22 fours. This is the highest score in ODIs in New Zealand by an Asian player.
Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 163 runs is legendary. Sachin achieved this feat in the 2009 Christchurch ODI. This is also the highest score achieved by Bangladesh in New Zealand. Apart from Soumya, only Mushfiqur Rahim (45 off 57 balls) shone in Bangladesh. Jacob Duffy and William O’Rourke took three wickets each for New Zealand. Soumya Sarkar became the star of the match with her third ODI century.
