Gaza –
Hamas government media office in Lane Gaza, Palestinians say 20,000 people have been killed in the Palestinian territories since the war with Israel began. As many as 8 thousand of them are children.
Reported by AFP and BBC, Thursday (21/12/2023), Hamas said around 8,000 children and 6,200 women were among the dead, as the conflict continues to rage more than two months after it broke out on October 7.
According to data from the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, an average of nearly 300 people have been killed every day since the start of the conflict, not including a seven-day ceasefire. The World Health Organization (WHO) regional emergency director, Richard Brennan, said he considered the casualty figures credible.
Counting the dead is a challenge in any war zone. Doctors in Gaza say the death toll is likely to be much higher because it does not include bodies buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings or those who were not taken to hospital.
Earlier, Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry said 12 people were killed in a series of airstrikes in Rafah near the Egyptian border. Meanwhile dozens of other people were injured.
“Twelve martyrs and dozens of injured people, including women and children, were recovered from under the rubble when a house and mosque were targeted hundreds of meters from a Kuwaiti hospital,” the ministry said in a statement, as reported by AFP, Thursday (21 /12).
AFP correspondents witnessed more than 10 airstrikes hitting several houses near the border. AFP video footage showed thick clouds of smoke and flames rising amid a large explosion that rocked the border area.
