Even with the console control firmly fixed on the table, Teresa Oliveira feels a freedom of movement that is very different from that of everyday life. “I can’t jump or run, but I can do those kinds of things in a video game. It’s something that allows the imagination to enjoy,” she describes it. As a patient with ostrogenesis imperfecta, Teresa had to learn to overcome herself to leave the wheelchair and start walking with crutches. Now, the challenge is different: due to brittle and malleable bones, she was unable to rotate her right wrist, but motor limitations have stopped being a problem in the last 15 days. Teresa looks at her partner Mário Trindade and smiles: “We found something to entertain us during our old age!”
Teresa, 49, and Mário Trindade, 48, will still have to wait until old age, but they already know what it’s like to compete in video games that were previously out of their reach. And all because they were selected to use the new Access controller, which is aimed at users with physical limitations on the PlayStation 5. And it is in this capacity as technological pioneers that they smile at the possibility of playing what they were previously unable to do.
