The Ukrainian national team played the final match of the elite round of qualifying for the 2024 World Cup. To directly qualify for the world championship, the “blue-yellows” had to exclusively beat Poland, which was two points ahead of our team and led Group B.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Ukrainians took control of the ball, but it was not easy to get close to the opponents’ goal. The Poles concentrated on destructive actions and, with their tight guarding, caused many problems for our players. In such a game, the first goal was almost of key importance, and the “blue-yellows” coped with this task. Kaluzha reacted to Chernyavsky’s shot, but Abakshin was the first to finish. And soon the Ukrainians’ advantage was doubled by Shoturma, who completed the corner with an accurate shot.
The Poles were forced to go on the attack more actively, and Savenko really came to the rescue after Kubik’s hit. And the positive emotions that remained from the goalkeeper’s save were strengthened by the third goal of the Ukrainian national team. The one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper was realized by Korsun, who skillfully sent the ball into the goal.
Before the break, the blue-and-yellows still had many opportunities to increase their advantage: Chernyavsky, Zhuk, Abakshin scored. And in the last minute of the first half of the match, a quick combination by the Ukrainians ended with an accurate shot from Korsun.
The Poles have demonstrated their character more than once in the current tournament, including in the first duel with our team. They tried to make a comeback in today’s confrontation. By the 30th minute, Kanevski scored a double, reducing the gap in the score to two goals. Fortunately, Semenchenko’s goal arrived just in time, beating the goalkeeper from a tight angle.
4 minutes before the final siren, the Poles switched to playing with a fifth field, but with a numerical superiority they managed to score only one goal (Rashkowski scored). The Ukrainian team won and will represent our country at the World Championships!
