Electric Cars Outsell Diesel in EU, Hybrid and Gasoline Cars Follow Suit

The share of battery electric cars sold rose to 16.3 percent from 15 percent a year ago, again surpassing the share of diesel cars, which remained at 13.7 percent. Some markets, including the two largest, saw significant double-digit increases – Italy by 16.2 percent and France by 14 percent. On the contrary, the German car market recorded a year-on-year decrease of 5.7 percent.

In the 11 months of this year, the number of registrations in the entire Union increased by 15.7 percent to almost ten million cars. With the exception of Hungary, all EU markets grew during this period.

In terms of market share, hybrid electric cars came in second with a market share of 27.4 percent, while gasoline cars maintained their lead with a share of 32.7 percent.

The number of registrations of new battery electric cars in the EU increased by 16.4 percent to 144,378 vehicles in November. Several markets contributed to this growth with double- and triple-digit percentage increases, notably Belgium (up 150.2 percent), which is now the fifth largest market by volume. However, sales of battery electric cars saw a decline in Germany, where they decreased by 22.5 percent. Despite this, year-to-date volume reached nearly 1.4 million units, an increase of 48.2 percent over the previous year. At the same time, this represents a share of 14.2 percent of the car market in the EU.

Volkswagen remained the largest carmaker, increasing sales by 11.4 percent in November. Škoda Auto, which is part of the concern, increased sales by 38.7 percent. The Volkswagen Group has a market share of 26.2 percent. Sales of the second Stellantis fell by 7.3 percent, while sales of Renault, on the other hand, increased by 6.1 percent. Tesla increased sales by almost 45 percent.
