Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia NASA recorded a new history in communications technology in space. This institution is able to send streaming video with UHD resolution using laser technology.

The UHD streaming video shows a cat named Taters. NASA is able to stream at a distance of more than 30 million kilometers from Earth.

NASA’s Space Optical Communications Division experimented with video streaming of cats on December 11 2023, quoted from NASA’s official website, Wednesday (20/12/2023).

NASA’s latest communications technology demonstration aims to test the ability to transmit data from deep space. If successful, future humans are expected to be able to explore wider space beyond Earth’s orbit.

“This achievement demonstrates our commitment to improving optical communications capabilities as a key to meeting future data transmission needs,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.

“Increasing bandwidth is very important in supporting future exploration. We will continue to improve advanced technology for communications transformation in future missions,” he added.

The cat streaming demo lasted 15 seconds via technology called a flight laser transceiver.

The video signal takes 101 seconds to reach Earth. The video capacity utilizes a maximum bit rate of 267 Mbps.
