Five of the world’s 11 best tennis players will be those who started on Monday US Open missed due to injury.

When asked by CNN Sport’s Amanda Davies whether the men’s schedule needed to be changed, Mouratoglou suggested that players should follow Roger Federer’s example and think more carefully about which tournaments they play in.

The 36-year-old Federer, who has won 19 Grand Slam titles, started 2017 with a win at the Australian Open, then decided against the French Open and triumphed at Wimbledon.

“The fact is that if they play longer, they must also be able to manage their schedule better or differently,” Mouratoglou said.

“I think players are slowly but surely learning to manage their schedule and that’s the trend – players are playing longer and need to be able to avoid burning out during the season.

“I think that Roger [Federer] has done really well this year. He skipped Roland Garros, which was really difficult for him because of course it’s a Grand Slam and he would have liked a chance to win it.

“But he thought, ‘If I do this, I’ll put myself in a position where I can maybe win Wimbledon,’ and he did that, so that was very smart of him,” Mouratoglou added.

Twelve-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is another absentee at Flushing Meadows – last month he announced he would not play again in the 2017 season due to a long-term elbow injury.

This year, the ATP World Tour, which began in January and will end in November, includes 62 tournaments in 31 countries.

Todd Ellenbecker, the ATP’s vice president of medical services, believes the relentless grind throughout the year is the cause of most injuries on the tour.

“Most injuries in tennis are classified as overuse… Not a specific force or trauma, but a continuous, repeated overload from smaller forces that leads to a breakdown in the player’s body,” Ellenbecker told Reuters.

This article has been updated to clarify that Roger Federer has won 19 Grand Slam titles.
