- Partners who share money understand each other’s needs better and have a longer marriage.
- Couples who keep money separately are more likely to break up, while partners with joint accounts struggle less over money
- A quarter of Americans in their 40s are single
For a healthy marriage, keep the money in the same account as your partner. Couples who keep their money together are more likely to live a beautiful and long life together, according to a 14-year study of 230 American couples. Americans say this is because partners are starting to talk more about their financial goals and better understand each other’s needs.
With or without shared money, a quarter of Americans in their 40s are not married. It’s the largest percentage of people unmarried that America has had since 1900, when it began publishing data on people’s relationships. And if they still haven’t married, they keep their partners at a distance. Almost three-quarters live separately from their partners.
