33 Cases of Diphtheria Reported in North Aceh, Two Deaths in November 2023

SERAMBINEWS.COM, BANDA ACEH – North Aceh Regency was the highest, with 33 cases of diphtheria found as of November 2023. Two people died.

It is known that diphtheria is a disease that attacks the upper respiratory system and throat, causing tissue membranes to die and accumulate in the throat and tonsils.

Data from the Aceh Health Service (Dinkes) as of November, North Aceh was the highest district with 6 cases, followed by Aceh Besar and Banda Aceh with 5 cases and Bireuen with 4 cases.

Meanwhile, one person from North Aceh and Aceh Jaya died due to diphtheria.

The year has not yet closed, but the number of cases in 2023 beats the number of cases in the previous year.

Last year, the number of diphtheria cases in Aceh was 30 people with three deaths throughout 2022. This means there will be an increase of 3 cases as of November 2023.

Head of the Aceh Health Service (Kadinkes), Dr. Munawar, said that the cause of the increase in diphtheria cases this year was due to low immunization of newborn babies.

The reason for parents is generally because the impact of vaccines during immunization causes children to have high fevers and illness.

“Even though fever after the vaccine is good, it means there is a reaction in the formation of the body’s immune system,” explained Dr. Munawar when met in his room, Monday (11/12/2023).

This explanation is supported by data on immunization status where 76 percent of diphtheria sufferers in Aceh were those who were not immunized.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division of the Aceh Health Office, Dr. Iman Murahman, said that there had been a sharp increase in diphtheria cases in a number of areas.

“If we look at it annually, it will definitely be higher this year,” said Dr. Iman.

The increase in cases occurred in several districts/cities, such as North Aceh, up 5 cases, Aceh Besar up 4 cases, Bireuen and Banda Aceh each up 1 case.
