This started last Thursday and was an attack by the pro-Russian group NoName057. These types of attacks are announced on telegram. Here’s a screenshot of this Saturday’s attack: https://imgur.com/a/G6rnkKO. As you can see, there were several Belgian targets.
They use the DDOS tool DDoSIia, you can read more about it here: https://www.sekoia.io/en/glossary/ddosia-project/. This tool automatically downloads attack JSONS files with the targets and types of attacks. In this case it was mainly a Layer 7 DDOS. I have the JSON. People install the DDoSia voluntarily, and there are now bitcoin incentives to encourage this.
The attack can be blocked quite easily using a dynamic IP block list. The lists of For example, it does not block everything, but companies can use their own DDOS tools to recognize the patterns and then (temporarily) block the source IPs or place them behind a captcha.
