Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel proposed as intermediary for informal contacts with Russia, says expert

The United States should use former German Chancellor Angela Merkel as an intermediary to establish informal contacts with Russia.

This opinion was expressed in his article for the American publication The Hill professor Bruce Dayton from the Vermont School of International Education.

He recalled that the former German Chancellor has extensive experience in dealing with Vladimir Putin and has freedom of maneuver, since it is not associated with the current German government.

“There are others who could fill this role. Transnational corporations and their common financial goals create connections that can unite people across borders,” the expert writes.

He proposes, with the help of such intermediaries, to intensify informal negotiations between the West and Russia regarding the situation in Ukraine. The professor believes that communication between private individuals helps to identify common ground for subsequent formal negotiations.

“Biden’s dysfunctional familial view of foreign policy means that sometimes a person needs a trusted aunt or uncle to step in when cousins are fighting. The moment has come for third parties to help us find a new world for Europe,” concludes Deighton.

As reported EADailyformer head of the German Ministry of Defense Boris Pistorius predicted “new military threats” to Europe by the end of the decade. He called on EU countries to quickly strengthen their military capabilities.
