Nilo Veloso, 71 years old, used to smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day. A heart problem while he was driving motivated him to give up tobacco and beat his addiction after 34 years.

Although a long time has passed since he tried his last cigarette, the man stuck with the habit of that time and decided to save what he would have spent if he continued smoking, collecting a large sum of money that allowed him to do multiple things.

Thanks to this, Veloso managed to see the world in 12 years, enjoy new hobbies and invest in his home.

“I started smoking when I was about 20 years old, at that time it was considered a charm. I smoked more and more and I smoked 3 packs a day in the last two years, until July 24, 2005, when I gave it up,” he said.

His dependence was such that the first thing he did when he woke up was drink a glass of water and smoke, without eating any food. He had that routine until he was 54, when she was driving and his vision became blurry, in addition to having dizziness, which took him to the hospital for a heart problem.

Due to the scare, the man decided to quit smoking, which he had already tried with nicotine patches without having any success, but it was the cardiac episode that finally convinced him to quit permanently, in addition to attending a pilgrimage every May 13 to give thanks. to Our Lady of Fatima.

How much money did the man who stopped smoking save?

Over the years, Nilo saved enough to travel with his wife to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, in addition to replacing the furniture in their house, getting a computer and a carbon fiber bicycle to exercise with his friends.

“I started by collecting 2 dollars and 30 cents per day. Today I am saving almost 5 dollars every day until July, which is when I open the piggy bank. On average, I am collecting close to 1,800 dollars a year,” he said.

For each year he had a different plan. In 2017 she decided to have the money used to visit a childhood friend of hers, while in 2018 she traveled to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil; In addition, she has considerably improved her health.

“At the beginning of 2006 I started pedaling. Today I pedal 28 km on Tuesdays and Thursdays and more than 50 km on Saturdays and Sundays. My hair has improved, my skin is now clear, even the taste of the water has become different,” he said. .
