“Bloomberg”, referring to a letter from Pentagon Comptroller Michael McCord, reports that the US Department of Defense is spending the last $1.07 billion to buy new weapons and equipment to replace weapons removed from stockpiles and sent to Ukraine.
Fifteen days later – on December 30 – its accounts will be empty.
“When these funds are disbursed, the department will have exhausted our available funding for security assistance to Ukraine,” McCord wrote in a letter to the heads of the House and Senate Defense Policy and Appropriations committees.
The letter will increase pressure on Congress to break the impasse over more than $60 billion that President Joe Biden has requested in aid to Ukraine.
Republican lawmakers say the package must include measures to increase security on the U.S. border with Mexico or they won’t approve it. Biden administration officials have been trying to negotiate a compromise spending package with senators.
The Biden administration announced on December 12 that it was sending Ukraine a $200 million package of US materials, including artillery shells, anti-personnel ammunition and other weapons.
