Eggs, in particular, and certain fruits and vegetables visible in neighborhood markets have shown an increase in prices in recent days. Eggs currently cost around 800 ariary for non-sized eggs and 750 ariary for medium-sized eggs in grocery stores and markets in the capital. The same is true for certain fruits, even though they are in season, such as mangoes and lychees. From 1,200 to 1,500 ariary per kilo, just a week ago at the Andravoahangy market, lychees were offered last weekend at 1,600 to 2,000 ariary per kilo on the same market. Some untimely increases also observed in the price of flour at certain retailers in the Capital. The increase is therefore not generalized. Prices from wholesalers have not seen significant increases and are around 164,000 to 170,000 ariary per 50 kg bag depending on the brands and origins of the products.
These food products, which are currently experiencing some price increases, are generally used for the manufacture of products in high demand during the end-of-year celebrations – including cakes and various desserts – both within households and at the level of caterers and other catering professionals. According to egg retailers, in particular, an increase in prices is still observed during the end-of-year holiday period, despite an increasing supply. Prices subsequently struggle to come down once this period has passed.
