Scottish travelers Chris and Julie Ramsey were able to announce about the completion of its nine-month expedition “Electric Car from Pole to Pole” with a length of about 27 thousand kilometers – the world’s first run from the North Pole to the South Pole in an electric car. The couple actually reached their destination on December 15 (Friday), but they were able to share the news only after reconnecting to the satellite later. They achieved this result using the electric Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE, which was modified by Icelandic specialist Arctic Trucks.
All the extra load on the electric car meant it had to make do with a reduced range of just 240-230km – a reduction from its original 435km mark. During the Arctic and Antarctic portions of the trip, the Ramseys used various tricks to keep the car’s battery warm to improve efficiency. Depending on the weather, they used a 5-kilowatt wind turbine or a prototype solar hybrid charger to charge their Ariya. When that didn’t work, they had to use a gas generator – mandatory equipment for crossing the Arctic regions.
According to Chris, the purpose of the Pole to Pole Electric Vehicle ride is to prove that electric vehicles can be a viable replacement for existing diesel expedition vehicles in polar regions.
In 2017, a Scottish couple became the first to take part and complete the rally to Mongolia in an electric car – a modified Nissan Leaf Acenta. Charging was relatively easy between the UK and Turkey, but beyond that they had to rely on household sockets, leading to many memorable encounters with the locals.
Naturally, all this is done for the sake of advertising contracts that bring the couple tens of millions of dollars.
