Iranian Gas Stations Hit by Cyber Attack: Possible Sabotage Reported by Iranian Television

Iranian television reported that there may have been sabotage, which could mean a cyber attack.

The broadcaster said the disruption was caused by a “software issue” and urged people not to rush to stations that were still operating.

The Israeli media, including the “Times of Israel” newspaper, blamed the hacker group “Gonjeshke Darande” for the incident.

There are about 33,000 gas stations in Iran, of which more than 30% continue to operate, Iranian television reported.

In recent years, Iran has seen a series of cyber attacks on its gas stations, railway system and industrial sectors. Surveillance cameras in government buildings and prisons have also been hacked.

The group “Gonjeshke Darande”, whose name translates as “predatory sparrow”, hacked a large steel production company in the southwest of the country in 2022, and in 2021 carried out a cyber attack on Iran’s fuel distribution system, paralyzing the operation of gas stations throughout the country.

Iran, long under Western sanctions, has a hard time getting the latest hardware and software, and often has to rely on Chinese-made electronics or older systems that manufacturers no longer repair. This makes it easier for hackers to carry out attacks.
