In Gironde, orange vigilance was lifted after the floods, but the water caused a lot of damage. A huge book warehouse was notably affected.

It is now by 4×4 that Didier Rodriguez must go to his workplace, the Book Village, transformed into a peninsula after the recent floods. Behind these walls are eight million ancient books. In reserve, the water rose much higher than expected. Around a hundred thousand structures were impacted by the rising waters, a huge loss. However, activity is far from stopping.

Clearly visible damage

As the end-of-year holidays approach, employees are busy preparing around a hundred orders per day. On the ground, the damage is still clearly visible. “As someone who is passionate about books, it really hurts my heart to see this. Usually we have space to walk between the shelves, now we have to make our way.”, says an employee. Several weeks of restoration will be necessary for Europe’s largest bookstore to be able to turn the page.
