Murcia Opens Flu Vaccination to Entire Population: How to Get Vaccinated at Municipal Health Facilities

MURCIA. Vaccination against flu has been opened this week to the entire population in Murcia, hence the Department of Social Welfare, Family and Health of the capital’s City Council, led by Pilar Torres, encourages citizens to approach municipal facilities of Health in the Salitre Garden.

From this moment it is not necessary to belong to one of the risk groups to receive the compound against this season’s flu virus, so any citizen can request an appointment by calling 968 358600 extension 38314 and 33422 and come on Monday to Friday (except holidays) at the indicated time, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The forecast that health professionals had was that throughout this month of December, with the decrease in flu vaccination of priority groups, immunization of the rest of the population would begin, as long as doses were available, as is the case. For this reason, it was this week that the Health Department of the Region of Murcia gave the green light for anyone to be vaccinated, whether or not they have risk pathologies.

Councilor Pilar Torres explains that “the main objective of this campaign is to reduce morbidity and mortality due to flu and Covid-19, especially among people who are most at risk of developing serious illness”, to which she adds that “Covid and flu present similar complication and mortality rates, so it is essential that the elderly and risk groups protect themselves.”

Since the beginning of the campaign, last October, the Municipal Health Service of the Murcia City Council has administered nearly 5,000 doses of flu and Covid-19 vaccines. Specifically, 2,841 citizens have received the flu vaccine (2,677 adults and 164 children) and 2,060 Murcians have been immunized against the coronavirus (2,039 adults and 21 children).

The councilor responsible for Health insists that “it is important to promote the vaccination of children under 5 years of age, given that in this age group there are more consultations, more hospital admissions (68 percent of the admitted minors did not present any risk factor). risk) and more serious cases than among people over 65 years of age.

In consultation number 1 of the Jardín del Salitre, different types of vaccines are administered, such as those established in the vaccination schedule and which the Public Health Commission approved on February 17, 2022.

This schedule includes vaccination against 14 vaccine-preventable diseases from before birth, with the vaccination of pregnant women to the vaccination of people aged 65 and over, as well as risk groups.

Specifically, there are vaccines against diseases such as poliomyelitis; diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis; haemophilus influenzae type b; MMR; chickenpox; hepatitis B; meningococcal disease, serogroups A, C, W, Y and B; human papilloma virus; pneumococcal disease; and Herpes Zoster.

Health professionals also administer vaccines to update vaccination schedules for immigrants, institutionalized minors, or social services.

Added to these is the seasonal vaccination against influenza, which is administered in autumn-winter following the protocols of the Vaccination Program of the Ministry of Health, vaccines against Covid-19, vaccines in travelers referred by Foreign Health, vaccines against sexually transmitted infections (STI) that arise from the CheckPoint consultation and, new this fall 2023, the administration of the monoclonal antibody against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants under 6 months of age.
