Dutch Handball Players Secure Olympic Qualification with 5th Place Finish at World Cup

Dec 17, 2023 at 2:29 PM Update: 3 minutes ago

The Dutch handball players did well at the World Cup on Sunday in the battle for participation in the Olympic Games in Paris. The Dutch team defeated Germany in the match for fifth place 30-26, and therefore moves to an easier group at the Olympic qualifying tournament (OKT).

Without Nikita van der Vliet, Zoë Sprengers, captain Lois Abbingh and Estavana Polman, the Netherlands entered the dressing room at halftime with a nine-point lead (7-16).

After the interruption, national coach Per Johansson’s team suffered a bit, without endangering their lead. With seven goals, Angela Malestein was the top scorer on the Dutch side.

In this way, the Dutch team still ends the World Cup on a positive note. The 2019 world champion lost without a chance to defending champion Norway in the quarter-finals, making fifth place the maximum possible for the Dutch team. On the way to fifth place, Montenegro was previously defeated 25-28.

Thanks to fifth place, the handball players have a more favorable draw at the Olympic qualifying tournament, which will be played in April next year. The Netherlands will compete against the Czech Republic, Argentina and Spain. The two best teams in the group go to the Games in Paris.

Later in the day, the World Cup final between Norway and France will be played in the Danish city of Herning. Two years ago the final battle was also between the two countries. Norway had no children with the French at the time (29-22).
