Vienna will turn into a party zone again on New Year’s Eve. The 32nd New Year’s Eve Trail winds its way through the city again, including the town hall square and the market near the Ferris wheel. According to the City of Vienna Marketing, this year there will be 80 hours of program at eight locations – from Falco tributes to waltz courses to the laser show. Admission is free.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people gather to celebrate the turn of the year on Vienna’s New Year’s Eve Trail. In addition to the square near the town hall and the Prater branch, the central stations this year are again the Freyung, the Am Hof square, the Graben, the Stephansplatz, the Kärntner Straße and the Neuer Markt.
According to the organizers, more than two dozen food stands along the festive mile provide for your physical well-being. The culinary offering includes both vegan food and more rustic dishes such as sausages and potato goulash. A variety of drinks with and without alcohol are also promised, including the compulsory sparkling wine on this day.
The New Year’s Eve path, which stretches around two kilometers in length in the city, is open until 2 a.m. You can celebrate in the city center from 2 p.m., and at the Ferris wheel and town hall squares from the evening hours. The latter is part of the event again this year after a year’s break. The Ringstrasse will also be closed in this area from 10 p.m.
The stage at Rathausplatz will feature one of the central program items, namely the tribute show “Falco – In Concert”. In sync with the artist’s performance recordings, Falco’s original band interprets many of his best-known numbers. Other living artists are also there, such as Alkbottle frontman Roman Gregroy, cabin party rapper Skero, actor Johannes Krisch and hip-hop singer Yasmo. The TV presenter Tobias Pötzelsberger speaks the well-known “News Flash” from Falco’s song Jeanny live.
The musical stage program in the rest of the city covers numerous genres of pop, rock, disco, Latin and soul. The Bad Powells, for example, will be making a guest appearance at Freyung and will be playing dance floor hits. The band Hope Will Lead spreads more alternative pop melodies at Stephansplatz. Various DJs perform on Kärntner Straße.
But it can also be traditional and classic: On New Year’s Eve in the afternoon, the Graben is once again transformed into Europe’s largest ballroom. Waltz dance courses can be taken there at the last minute.
One item on the program is missing again, and intentionally so: the fireworks. For the sake of people, animals and the environment, this will be avoided, said the City of Vienna Marketing. Instead of large pyrotechnic displays, there will be an eight-minute laser show on Rathausplatz to the sounds of the Danube Waltz. Visitors who would like to bring their own rockets and firecrackers should be warned. Letting them crash or shooting them is strictly forbidden.
If you want to listen to public music in the city after the long celebrations on the first day of the year, you will find what you are looking for at Stephansplatz and Riesenradplatz: the traditional New Year’s concert by the Vienna Philharmonic will be broadcast live there.
