For the 1st of Cologne, the travel stress breaks out again before Christmas. On Sunday the Billy Goats will play at SC Freiburg im Breisgau. Just three days later, the people of Cologne have to compete in Berlin, over 800 kilometers away from Freiburg.
Because of this, 1. FC Köln has exceptionally decided to use airplanes as a means of travel. Between the two games, the entourage goes back to the cathedral city and every hour that the FC professionals are in bed earlier on Sunday evening counts with a view to the last away game of the year at the Alte Försterei.
“We’re trying to get to Freiburg and back relatively quickly so that we can regenerate well despite the short time,” said Steffen Baumgart. Accordingly, after their obligatory final training on Saturday, the Cologne team set off for the airport at 3:30 p.m.
With 21 players heading towards Freiburg
Leart Pacarada and Sargis Adamyan did not get on the bus. The duo will not play any more games this calendar year due to muscle injuries. While Adamyan hadn’t made it into the matchday squad for weeks anyway, youngster Max Finkgräfe came along for Pacarada.
Otherwise, Steffen Baumgart left his squad unchanged compared to the 0-0 draw against Mainz. At least for now, because with Faride Alidou, a 21st player surprisingly got on the bus on Saturday. The loanee from Eintracht Frankfurt was recently missing due to an injury. The FC coach will therefore have to remove one player from the squad on Sunday.
