A Christian mother and daughter were shot dead by an Israeli soldier in the area around the Latin parish of the Holy Family, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced.
“Around noon today, an Israeli army sniper killed two Christian women in the Holy Family parish in Gazawhere Christian families took shelter after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas, the patriarchate said in a statement.
“Nahida and her daughter Samar were shot while walking to the sister monastery. One was killed while trying to carry the other to safety,” the statement added, without specifying the ages of the victims.
Seven more people were injured from gunfire while trying to protect others, the statement said.
The Israeli army did not respond to a request for comment on the incident on the territory of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, AFP reported.
The patriarchate said no warning had been given before the shooting began, adding: “They were shot in cold blood on the premises of the parish, where there are no warring parties.”
The war in Gaza was sparked by an unprecedented attack by “Hamas” against Israel on October 7, in which, according to official figures, about 1,140 people died, most of them civilians.
Israel’s campaign to crush the militant group has so far claimed the lives of at least 18,800 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry.
